Hydration and Recovery Tip 3 – How having both carbohdryates and protein in a specific ratio hydrates you better than just carbohydrates or water alone?

How does a sports drink formulation with a specific carbohyrate to protein ratio deliver better hydration during and after training than water or a carbohydrate only drink??   Protein in a workout drink – how does that work and does it really help at all? That is probably the question asked most frequently about PureSport. We’re all pretty well educated about needing protein to recover (via a protein drink or lean chicken or the chocolate milk standby!) but needing protein during exercise is still pretty new and somewhat controversial. So here is a summary of the outcomes of some recent research that supports the addition of protein in a sports drink formulation.

The traditional approach of ‘carbo loading’ and water consumption has largely given way to electrolytes and carbohydrate containing beverages for ingestion during exercise. These beverages are designed to provide a steady energy supply to active muscles throughout an exercise session, but many provide only an immediate and acute energy boost leaving muscles without adequate energy supplies at critical moments. More studies have shown that consumption of a mixture of carbohydrates and protein can yield a better muscular performance during exercise and more rapid and complete muscle recovery after exercise.

Too often, things that taste great are bad for you, and things that are good for you can sometimes taste pretty bad. PureSport is different – not only does it taste really good (Banana Berry is my favourite) but it’s also quite simply the best performing hydration and recovery product that I have ever used.

During a recent training camp up in North Queensland, my brother and I completed 5 days of long, hard and fast riding in the heat, on poor roads and with a lot of climbing. PureSport Workout was the only drink we used (we each drank 2 litres per 100km of riding) and we were both amazed at how good we felt during and at the end of each day’s riding. We also drank a litre of PureSport Recovery after finishing every ride, and we both agreed that it was the Recovery that helped us feel fresh for the next morning’s start. As triathletes, we even spiced things up with a training run on Day 3 and we both cruised along at sub-4 minute per kilometre pace with almost none of the normal “dead leg” feeling that we used to get when running after big bike sessions.

I have been racing for almost 20 years and I’ve tried many hydration and nutrition products in that time – I honestly feel that PureSport is far and away the best performing and best tasting product that I’ve used, and if you’re serious about training and competing in any sport, then PureSport is the best you can get. PureSport tastes great, gives you the protein you need to start and complete every session feeling strong, and it mixes quickly and easily: it’s no wonder Michael Phelps won 8 Olympic Gold medals drinking this stuff!

Hydration and Recovery Tip 2 – Why is the right sports drink before, during and after exercise the most convenient and effective way to remain hydrated and improve your recovery?.

Ok, you have asked yourself “Why do I need a Sports Drink?” and “Can’t I just drink water?”

We are constantly asked these questions at each event we have been to. There’s been a lot of research done into this question, especially how this impacts the body during endurance based activities. So in answering this one, we went to the Sports Dietitions Australia website and these are the key points around why they believe the right sports drink does hydrate athletes effectively and also helps improve recovery.

a. Before - Sports drinks may be used before an event to fine tune an athletes’ fluid and fuel intake. The carbohydrate tops up muscle glycogen fuel levels while the added sodium may reduce urine losses before exercise.

b. During - Sports drinks are designed for use during exercise for optimal fluid and fuel delivery. They can allow the athlete to perform for longer and more effectively in training and competition.

c. After - Sports drinks assist to meet an individual’s nutrition recovery goals by replacing fluids lost in sweat and also assist with refuelling to replenish muscle glycogen stores. To meet all recovery goals, the ingestion of sports drinks should be supplemented with other fluids that can provide additional carbohydrates, protein and other nutrients essential for recovery.

So we’ve talked about ensuring you maintain a balanced body chemistry, why the right sports drink is important and next we’ll talk about what happens within your body when you add protein to a sports drink that you use both during and after exercise.

Hydration and Recovery Tip 1 – How to extend endurance, speed muscle recovery and reduce muscle damage

How can balancing your body chemistry before, during and after training extend endurance, speed muscle recovery and reduce muscle damage?

At many of the events we’ve been to since we launched PureSport in Australia last year, one of the most common questions we’re asked is how can I train harder for longer and still feel that I can train just as hard the next day? The short answer to this question is ensuring your body is effectively hydrated plus supplying your body with the right amount and type of energy. Our first tip below looks at this in some more detail:

a. A key aspect to a successful exercise regime – whether recreational, health driven or competitively targeted – is proper energy supply and hydration of active muscles both during and after exercise/competition.1
b. Optimal athletic performance requires proper nutrition and hydration during and after exercise sessions. This is especially true of endurance athletes where long periods of exertion may deplete endogenous energy stores, potentially compromising performance, recovery and athletes’ health.2

Next time we’ll talk about another question we’re often asked – why is the right sports drink (as opposed to any other form of drink) is the best way to hydrate

Please let us know if you have any thoughts about this or tips of your own you’d like to share.

Suzanne Murphy, mother of three, shares why she couldn’t do without PureSport Recovery

Hi – While I have never contacted a company regarding their product, I feel compelled to do so about PureSport’s Recovery Drink.

I am 43 years old and just ran the NYC marathon three days ago.  I have been a runner for almost 20 years and over many years, running the NYC marathon eluded me due to over-training injury.  I accidentally discovered PureSport’s Recovery drink while shopping for GU gels in Sports Authority here on Long Island where I live.  I used it after each of my long training runs over the last few months and it is MIRACULOUS!!  I now tell everyone about it and everyone says I sound like an infomercial.

After each long training run, I drank the recovery drink within 20 minutes of finishing and I did not feel sore.  I felt so good that my husband was convinced to try drinking it after his weekly basketball games.  He is a retired FDNY, 51 years old, and usually after his weekly games, he can hardly get out of the car and is very sore the next morning.

But, drinking the recovery drink immediately after the game has been amazing for him.  He is still a little bit sore, he has had double knee surgeries, but it is such a stark difference from when he didnt have the recovery drink.  He is fine afterward and feels perfect the next morning.

I don’t think I have come across a product that has been so life-altering.  I want every amateur athlete to try it because it is truly great.

Thank you!

Suzanne Murphy

How Michael Phelps became the Face of PureSport

As history’s greatest Olympian, Michael Phelps earns an estimated $5 million a year by endorsing some of the world’s best-known credit-card, hotel and cereal brands. But his appearance as pitchman for a Texas protein-powder maker might go down in the annals of sports marketing as one of the most unusual deals ever.

Before he earned his eight gold medals and became a global celebrity at the Beijing Olympics, Mr. Phelps and three teammates agreed to endorse PureSport, a protein mix made by a tiny Austin, Texas, company that didn’t exist three years ago.
