Matt’s story:
Matt has been swimming since he was 4 years old. He swam throughout his school years competing in local swimming competitions for his school and the local swimming club.
Matt grew up in Kingscliff in Northern NSW and moved to Sydney to train with the NSW Institute of Sports International Training Programme. Matt reguraly visits school groups and sporting clubs to share his experiences gained from swimming to talk on motivation and elements to be successful. He gets to see first-hand the positive impact that physical activity can have on youth, the same enjoyment and health benefits that sport brought to him growing up in a country town.
Matt has a successful debut at the 13th Fina World Swimming Championships in Rome where he finished 14th in the 50m Freestyle and swam in the final of the 4 x 100 Freestyle relay. After the World Championships Matt headed to Hobart to Swim at the Australian Shortcourse Championships where he won both the 50m and 100m Freestyle and now holds the Australian Record in both these events.
Since moving to Sydney Matt has emerged as one of Australia’s fastest 50m freestyle swimmers, recently upstaging his training partner and friend Eamon Sullivan (world record holder) at the Telstra Australian Swimming Championships. More recently Matt competed in Shanghai and won a gold medal as a member of the 4x100m freestyle relay team.
Humble, affable and determined, Matt epitomizes the ultimate quiet achiever. Matt is described by friends and family as driven and extremely motivated. He is kind, considerate and caring of his friends and competitors.
