Michael’s story:

My name is Michael Fox. I am a 23 year old triathlete and PDHPE teacher from Cronulla. I have now been doing triathlons for around 3 years and this year is my first year racing as a professional triathlete. I started out doing Surf Life Saving as a child, but always had an interest in giving triathlons a go. I gave the Australian Aquathlon Championship a go when it was in Cronulla. Not long after I bought my first bike and I was hooked.

After being the NSW TriSeries Olympic Distance Champion and finishing 2nd in the National Olympic Distance Series last year as an open age group triathlete, I am hoping to push forward and work my way up towards the top of the professional triathlon ranks.

Testimonial:

I have now been in the USA for nearly 3 weeks. It is fantastic here. Training full time and getting extra rest makes such a huge difference. It is a lot easier to train and get more done. I have been using PureSport Workout Fruit Punch to help me train harder and PureSport Recovery Fruit Punch to help me recovery quickly for the next session or after a race. The nutrition is one side of things that is so important when at altitude, as I feel like I dehydrate so much quicker.

Travelling and the hurdles that come with it are far from easy. I’ve been learning a lot about what it takes to be a professional triathlete and how to manage the problems that come up. From flats before and during races to borrowing helmets to meeting USAT rules, its been full of challenges.

My first race was in the Washington DC 5150 race and I wasn’t too pleased with my result. This was a tough day. I thought I was ready but the jetlag and effects of altitude clearly took their toll. I finished 22nd.

My second race was in Monroe ITU Pan American Cup. Unfortunately I got a flat in lap 3 of 8 in the bike, so I was left with no choice but to withdraw. This was very frustrating that my two races hadn’t been what I hoped. But this week I was racing well and was feeling really good. This was important because even though I didn’t finish, I lost any doubt in myself that may have come from DC 5150.

Now I am back in Boulder for my longest time period on the ground. I am training well, my body has now settled in and I am looking forward to my next race in San Francisco on July 9. Hopefully I can have a more successful race.

I am really looking forward to applying all the things I have learnt over here into my training when I get home. I will be starting into a big base phase, so I can then gear up for the Australian Summer.
